Maurice Mandelbaum was a professor of philosophy at The Johns Hopkins University. He received his B.A. from Dartmouth College, and his M.A. and Ph. D. from Yale University. He came to Hopkins in 1957. In 1967 he was named the first Andrew Mellon professor of philosophy. His area of specialization was the history of 19th century thought. Biographical Note: Philip D. Curtin is a historian and author. He was born in Philadelphia in 1922, graduated from Swarthmore in 1948, and completed his graduate studies at Harvard University where he received the Ph. D. in 1953. Dr. Curtin taught at Swarthmore, 1953-1956. In 1956, he received an appointment to the history department, University of Wisconsin, where he pursued his special interests in the fields of African and Caribbean history and worked to develop progr...
